The “Soviet firmware” in creative people from the generation now over 50 is of mixed quality. On the surface, it’s the same set of things heard, read, or observed once. But the experience of absorbing and later applying it turns out completely different for each.
Artist Andriy Mayorov is among those few lucky ones who don’t see the “Soviet firmware” as a trauma. On the contrary, he’s grateful to the past for shaping his creative future. Mayorov is technically diverse, genuinely contemporary, and the fleeting waves of mainstream and short-lived trends in “art” don’t knock him off the course he once chose.
